Today is a day that stands in our hearts and minds as a day to remember the fallen of past wars and for those out there fighting wars right now. I couldn’t find a photo today that truly represented how I felt about this day so I decided to do this instead:

STANDING ON THE EDGE

For those who stand on the edge between darkness and light
Your bravery stood fast and lasted the test of time to fight for what’s right

You were the ones who drew the line in the sand
Telling the darkness you will not harm this great land.

Your actions have allowed freedom to ring true
All things are possible by the things that you do

So today is a day that is for you; the brave men and women who fight, who’ve fought, who’ve fallen to protect our home.

May the light stand between you and the darkness keep you safe and guide you wherever you may roam.

Found this amazing tree with the water flowing by just made for a great surreal image. The wind was blowing fairly good which made the leaves take on a life of their own.

Great!!! Sunset with the light reflecting on the water made it just glow orange.

Last one was from up high before we went down to the water. The light was wild and made for an interesting HDR.

With getting a new camera system there are things that you have to consider: What body to start with, lenses to get, and accessories to have. All of these effect your photography because you may not have everything you had before so you have to find ways to make it work until you can completely replace your old system with your new one. One thing that I miss already is my 100 Macro that I had, while it was a specialty type lens really only good for a few things, I really enjoyed using it for Macro photography. But with the switch to Nikon I haven’t replaced that lens yet, so I did the next best thing. I slapped a Canon 500D close-up filter on the new 70-200f2.8 and went looking for some wild flowers.

I have no idea the names of these flowers, but they were really fun to photograph.

Not to bad for a windy day.

So not too long ago my friend Mark Krajnak wrote an article about missing the shot, it struck home and I went out an snagged a shot of an old truck that I have been wanting forever, but never took the time to go get it until Mark’s GOYA made me realize it could be gone any second. Now back to the present, me and my wayward excursions of roads less traveled, I realized that there was an old General Store on a backroad that I took over 6 years ago that I didn’t get a shot of at the time, because I had no camera with me (yes, I have learned from that mistake). So I loaded up the gear and set off to find this old place that I have thought of so many times, but spaced it every time I went in that direction. What I found is this:

Just so happened when I arrived there was a group of bicyclist all staging near the old place that had been riding through here for a while, they told me the building collapsed about 2 years back in a big storm that rolled through the valley. Words can’t honestly describe how angry I was at myself for not getting back out there sooner. I even had found notes on shot ideas for that location. I know even if I would have went when I was out to go shoot that truck that the building would still have been gone, but it is still a big disappointment to me. So I said it once and I will say it again, if you see something SHOOT IT!!!

The top shot was a quick edit in Silver Efex Pro. The lower shot was a bit more on the tweaking side to get that great aged look. I used a trick from the my book on how to age the tractor a bit by using Bleach Bypass to give the metal a bit of character, using exclusion control points on the surrounding areas to dampen the effect since I work mostly in Smart Filters now a days. After the trip through Color Efex, I dropped it into Silver Efex Pro and did a few quick edits and that is all she wrote. If you want to see a video of how this was done drop a line in the comments section, and I will try to get one posted in the next few days.

Shot of an old tool shed that was toward the end of the day. Loved the steel wheels with the Road Work sign.

It was really a shocking thing to note that this road, one that has been nearby all this time, and one that I hadn’t driven on in a very long time had so many great things to offer.

So I took the new gear out for a spin yesterday to get used to it and to make sure I worked out the kinks before heading to Texas for Jeff’s Texas Landscape Safari. I took a road that I haven’t been down in I don’t know how long, but I am happy I decided to head that way.

Came across a huge grouping of California Poppies to start of the trip. All this and I forgot my macro

At this top of the hill was this great tree. Made of a great conversion to Infrared B&W

Great mailbox about 2 miles from the flowers. I can’t believe all the stuff I was finding on a 5 mile stretch of road this point.

Found this guy hanging out at the barn below.

It was a great trip and this wasn’t all I caught. Over at the Life @ 50 project you can see what else I caught and I have a few more posts coming up in the next few days to show off a bit more of what I found. Had a lot of fun with an old tractor I found that I did a Single shot HDR on.
